Phimega Group Post #52
Intel 48-core cloud computing silicon chip
posted by soliton at Wed, 3 Mar 2010 - 09:54:01
Intel Labs has developed a prototype of a new Single-chip Cloud
Computer (acronym: SCC) which includes 48 cores on the same silicon chip. The chip, which includes 1.3 billion transistors, could find real applications in data and hosting centers; consider that today=92s top level CPUs for desktop computers include up to 4 cores, even though both Intel and its rival AMD have announced new 6-cores CPUs for this year. Intel had already developed a microprocessor with 80 cores in 2006. However, it was mainly a demonstration of the =93Tera-scale=94 project and that product was just a proof of concept, not finalized with commercial purposes; moreover, the 80 cores were not full functional CPUs, but rather floating-point accelerators. SCC, on the contrary, has been designed by Intel looking also at the potential markets and real applications of this powerful architecture and each core is based on the reliable yet well established x86 IA architecture (IA stands for Intel Architecture). The Tera-scale Computing Research Program was formed by Intel Labs Bangalore (India), Intel Labs Braunschweig (Germany), and Intel Labs researchers in the USA.
