All-in-one tuner module targets European low-cost radio market
posted by soliton at Thu, 29 Apr 2010 - 18:19:13
The Verona tuner module from Frontier Silicon, which the company plans
to demonstrate at the Hong Kong Electronics Fair, lets radio receiver
manufacturers break the twenty-euro price barrier for low cost, low
power World DMB Profile 1 radios.

Verona is designed to meet the exacting demands of entry-level radios
by using Frontier Silicon's Kino 3 baseband IC, which includes enough
on-chip memory to demodulate and decode all three World DMB standards
in one. Further cost savings are achieved by reducing the module size
to just 48 x 28 mm. According to the manufacturer, this major size
reduction yields the world's smallest module with support for FM, DAB,
DAB+, and DMB radio.

Radio manufacturers can take advantage of the economy of scale offered
by low-cost DAB, DAB+ and DMB radio (collectively known as World DMB
Profile 1) as markets around the world start migrating from FM to
digital radio. The UK is leading this evolution with the government=92s
=93Digital Britain=94 report citing radios priced at less than 20 pounds
as one of the key requirements for switching to digital. France is
expected to begin digital migration this year, with all receivers
required to have a DMB radio tuner by 2013. Italy and Germany are also
scheduled to launch DAB+ this year, joining established markets in
Switzerland and Australia.

Verona includes all interfaces necessary for a fully functional radio,
needing only a power supply, display, keypad, audio amplifier and
speaker for a complete product. A complete hardware and software
reference design (called Venus) is available to provide receiver
manufacturers with a turnkey design for a mains / battery powered
kitchen radio.
